As each year goes by technology speeds up and if you dont keep up with it you will fall way behind. Take it from one who has never sent a text message. Not because I dont know how to its just that I dont see the use of texting every miniscule aspect of my life to people who really dont give a darn. I can call them on my bluetooth in my hands free, self-parking, collision-avoiding auto.

Having said that, lets look at some points where technology can possibly benefit your business:

1. E-mail gathering. This is the easiest and maybe the most valuable tool you have. You must be able to stay in contact with your customers to invite them for a birthday special, an anniversary dinner or a special you may want to run on Tuesday night. Methods vary on collecting the e-mail addresses but you dont want to what I saw at a fast food restaurant recently. They put out a clipboard with a sheet of paper with columns for information including the date that the entry was made. When I looked at the three entries I noticed that they were from June and July and I was viewing them in late September. Not a vibrant list that many people want to join! Keep it current.

2. Website – Every restaurant should have a website because the Yellow Pages have gone to the Smithsonian Institute along with the rotary phone. Before a tourist goes out to eat they look online for the nearest _______(fill in the type restaurant) in the area. Other customers reviews will also sway a potential customer.

3. Telephone Aps – Heres an area I know very little about except that there are plenty of them. As explained to me a Mobile Application (Ap) is like a website that can be seen on a Smart Phone. What happens if someone with a low IQ uses a smart phone?

4 Twitter – For those of you who are members of our Business Network www.trnusa.com (Click on Business Network tab) You know my feelings about Twitter. I Tweet every day, sometimes more than once a day. You can follow my tweets at trnusa or foodequipmenttr. I know I have several hundred followers who wait breathlessly each day to hear what I might tell them. Usually its about a news article or a new listing of equipment but you can tell them about your lunch special or where your food truck will be at noontime.

5. Facebook – I have a page but cant figure out why you would want to see pictures or comments from my long lost relative or someone you dont know or like in some cases.

I know I am missing the boat on some of these marketing methods so I am going to begin a search for a thirteen year old to set me up and fully explain what is going on, or I can go to experts like Business Network members James Guertin or Bill Holderby who can set a course to take advantage of todays incredible marketing tools which we need to communicate with our existing customers and to find new ones as well.
